The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer is an all-electric wagon that represents Volkswagen's first foray into the electric wagon segment. It has the same exterior dimensions as the regular ID.7 but offers substantially more practicality with a larger cargo space.
The rear end of the ID.7 Tourer has been reshaped to enhance practicality, allowing it to swallow more cargo than the sedan model. It features a rear-mounted electric motor with 282 horsepower and 402 pound-feet of torque.
The Pro version of the ID.7 Tourer features a battery with a usable capacity of 77 kWh, while a Pro S version is also planned with a bigger 86-kWh pack. The electric wagon’s rear seats can be folded to increase the luggage capacity, and it also offers an optional roof box for added cargo space.
The optional panoramic sunroof features a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) layer that allows owners to make the roof transparent or opaque at the touch of a button. Overall, the ID.7 Tourer is designed for practicality and efficient electric performance.
A Beginner's Guide To Electric Vehicle Motors And How They Work
The Lowdown:
The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer is the first all-electric wagon from Volkswagen, closely related to the ID.7 sedan. This Tourer flaunts a distinct rear end compared to the fastback saloon.
Notably, its elongated roofline seamlessly transitions to the trunk lid, highlighting the electric wagon's unique design. Combining elements of a traditional estate like the VW Passat with the dynamic appeal of a shooting brake like the Arteon, the Tourer embodies a subtle fusion of style.
Its heightened rear end allows for an even larger luggage compartment volume compared to the fastback saloon. With seating for five, the ID.7 Tourer offers a luggage capacity of up to 605 liters (rear seat backrest in cargo position). When fully loaded to the front seat backrests and ceiling, this capacity expands to a maximum of 1,714 liters.
The interior offers space for five passengers and has up to 19.2 cubic feet of cargo space, which can be increased to a crossover-like 60.5 cubic feet by folding down the rear bench.
The ID.7 Tourer is positioned as an upmarket model and is expected to offer a similar set of features as the sedan, including a 15-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, electronically-controlled air vents, massaging front seats, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.
The interior design is predictable, even for an electric wagon, and resembles the ID.7, with an optional panoramic sunroof featuring a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) layer that can make the roof transparent or opaque at the touch of a button.
Volkswagen Unveils Electrifying Future With New GTI Badge
In the upcoming ID.7 electric wagon, Volkswagen is prioritizing premium-class comfort through various innovations. Noteworthy features include automatically operated vents driven by small control motors and ergoActive seats equipped with a new pressure-point massage function and automatic air conditioning.
Additionally, the panoramic sunroof with smart glass offers flexibility, allowing passengers to electronically switch between opaque and clear views.
Introducing the Wellness In-Car app adds a new dimension to comfort, offering three preconfigured programs (Fresh Up, Calm Down, and Power Break) aimed at enhancing well-being during the journey or breaks.
Depending on the vehicle's equipment, the app controls background lighting, sound, air conditioning, smart glass function, seat air conditioning, seat massage, ID.LIGHT, and the infotainment screen.
Furthermore, the ID.7 Tourer will debut innovative technological features, including a standard augmented-reality (AR) head-up display. This display projects relevant journey information directly into the driver's field of vision, promoting focused attention on the road.
Simultaneously, the AR head-up display transforms the cockpit architecture by compacting classic instruments, optimizing space and enhancing the overall driving experience.
The Lowdown:
The powertrain of the Volkswagen ID.7 electric wagon consists of a rear-mounted electric motor producing 282 horsepower (210 kilowatts) and 402 pound-feet (545 Newton-meters) of torque.
Additionally, the Pro version's battery has a usable capacity of 77 kWh. There are plans for a Pro S version with a larger 86-kWh battery pack in the future. This powertrain configuration provides the ID.7 with strong performance, efficient electric power delivery, and a competitive range, making it a compelling option in the electric wagon segment.
The new ID.7 Tourer features an advanced electric drive system of the latest generation. It will be available with two battery options with varying energy capacities. With the higher-capacity battery, the electric wagon is projected to achieve WLTP ranges of up to 685 km (426 miles).
Additionally, the larger battery supports fast charging, with a maximum capacity of up to 200 kW at DC fast-charging stations. This enables rapid charging from 10 to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes, returning you to the road faster than you can say Volkswagen.
The Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer combines practicality, aerodynamic design, and advanced features to provide a compelling electric wagon option in the market.
Imelda Labbé, Member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management, responsible for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, says:
“The new ID.7 Tourer is a perfect estate model, especially for families and long-distance drivers. With plenty of space and a high level of comfort, it impresses fully electrically with long ranges!" The ID.7 Tourer will be produced together with the ID.7 fastback saloon and the ID.4 SUV at the electric mobility plant in Emden, Germany.
