The Lexus RZ is a cutting-edge battery-electric SUV offered since 2023 and rides on a dedicated EV platform for instantaneous power and a low center of gravity. The Euro NCAP thinks it’s a large SUV, while America's EPA reckons it's a small SUV, but RZ, in our opinion, can wear multiple hats like a champ, and be whatever you want it to be. This SUV is leading Lexus’ foray into worldwide sales of dedicated battery electric vehicles after the electrified UX 300e.

Following the Lexus Electrified era announced in January 2023, the RZ is kicking off the season with significant updates for the 2024 MY, including the new RZ 300e, a front-wheel-drive model boasting a lower starting price by nearly $5000. Notably, the FWD configuration extends its range estimate to an impressive 266 miles, surpassing the AWD version's 220-mile cap. Furthermore, the RZ now offers mono- and bi-tone exterior paint options, including the all-new Copper Crest in the color palette.

Inside, subtle changes enhance the interior styling, while advanced driver-assistance technologies elevate the driving experience. Each RZ model comes equipped with a dual-voltage charging cord compatible with 120- and 240-volt outlets, ensuring convenient charging options for every Lexus RZ enthusiast. The RZ is built at the Motomachi Plant in Toyota City, Japan, and goes on sale in December.

How It All Began

2024 Lexus RZ overview.

The innovative LF-Z Electrified concept previewed the RZ in March 2021. In December, Lexus unveiled the prototype RZ during a press event where the parent company Toyota announced its future EV strategy.

The production model debuted at a media event on April 20, 2022, before the public unveiling at the Le Volan Cars Meet in Yokohama later in May. The RZ is hatched at Toyota's Technical Center in Shimoyama.

Finally making its North American debut in 2023 as the RZ 450e, it came standard with a fully variable "Direct4" all-wheel-drive system and an optional steer-by-wire technology. The 450e's front motor is a derivation of the Toyota bZ4X’s front-wheel-drive system, while the rear unit is sourced from the bZ4X’s all-wheel-drive variant, resulting in a faster SUV than the bZ4X/Solterra.

The 'DIRECT4' system allows for continuous variation of front/rear axle torque output from 100:0 to 0:100; under normal driving conditions, the torque split fluctuates between 40:60 and 60:40.

The RZ 450e uses the same storage battery as the bZ4X/Solterra, boasting a capacity of 71.4 kWh.  Depending on the wheel size, the 450e’s estimated range is between 200 to 225 miles as per the EPA driving cycle. The peak charging rate is 150 kW.

The SUV offers four levels of regenerative braking; the minimum level entirely removes regeneration, relying solely on the mechanical (hydraulic) brake system. As stated by the RZ 450e's chief engineer, Takashi Watanabe, this design choice was made to ensure a more traditional braking experience. At the highest level of regeneration, the rate of deceleration is 0.15 g0 (1.5 m/s2).

2024 RZ's Exterior Design And Color Options

2024 Lexus RZ exterior and colors.

The RZ offers a choice of six exterior and three interior colors. An optional bi-tone finish can extend the black "spindle" grill accent over the hood and roof.

The car's low hoodline and active grille shutter work together to minimize aerodynamic drag, with additional features like an underbody dimpled to generate tiny vortices and a roof spoiler to boost downforce.

The traditional Lexus spindle grille has been replaced with the Lexus spindle body, first seen on the 2023 Lexus RX, which includes a unique roof spoiler to counteract aerodynamic forces. The design of the roof, trunk, and undercarriage reduces aerodynamic drag and allows air to flow smoothly over the vehicle.

2024 Lexus RZ front fascia.

The RZ’s side profile directs attention to front fenders that appear to wrap around the wheels and tires before flowing rearward, suggesting forward motion. A strong three-dimensional shape over the rear fenders highlights the tires' width. The sculpted shapes of the doors contrast with this flow, creating a dynamic and eye-catching surface.

The absence of an engine allows for a low hood design and a minimal front grille opening. A grille shutter enhances aerodynamic efficiency, closing when cooling air is not required to reduce air resistance.

Rearward, the RZ sports a clean, simple horizontal design that matches the wide stance, emphasizing the vehicle's performance identity. An optional illuminated front "L" emblem indicates charging status and subtly integrates a millimeter wave radar sensor.

2024 Lexus RZ logo.

A spelled-out LEXUS logo (similar to those on the NX, LX, and RX) sits on the horizontal rear combination lamps, with the lowered center portion of the red lens accentuating the logo and emphasizing a sharp look. The RZ comes in two trim levels: Premium and Luxury.

The Premium model stands on 18-inch wheels finished in Dark Gray Metallic, while the Luxury model has 20-inch wheels in a Black and Machined finish.

Lexus says it will offer concierge service to RZ owners and lessees, complete with a dedicated team available by phone to answer questions about BEV (battery-electric vehicle) technology.

This is in addition to the dealer-based Lexus Reserve, which provides “exclusive complimentary rental service to anyone who purchases/leases a 2023 or 2024 RZ.”

The Luxury grade also offers the Tsuyasumi film, adding a modern, textured expression to the center console. Inspired by the concept of tazuna, the cockpit emphasizes a driver-centric layout with steering wheel-mounted switches and a 10-inch head-up display.

The shift-by-wire technology (discussed in more detail below) featuring a dial-type shift knob offers intuitive drive mode selection, a setup that further promotes the minimalistic cabin experience. Embracing the Japanese concept of oto-kukan, the RZ ensures a peaceful interior by reducing exterior noise.

Aesthetic features like a slimmer A-pillar, continuous hood seal, and Active Sound Control create a serene environment where the driver is even more in tune with the vehicle. Radiant heaters at the front console offer a cozy in-cabin experience, and innovative storage solutions replace the traditional glovebox.

Lexus’s revolutionary "One Motion Grip" is a steer-by-wire system that reimagines the driving experience. The steering yoke, detached from the steering rack, relies on a motor-driven mechanism, providing precise control with a 300-degree rotational range. This eliminates the need for traditional hand-over-hand movements, offering a seamless and intuitive response to varying driving conditions.

While some initially view the yoke as a novelty, hands-on tests reveal its brilliance. Motor Trend praised the system for its ability to minimize unnecessary movement, adapting instantly to changing conditions.

The result is a groundbreaking engineering feat that has the potential to redefine and enhance the driving experience, marking a significant step forward in automotive innovation.

It delivers an EPA-estimated range of 266 miles riding on 18" wheels and an EPA-estimated MPGe of 137/112/125 (city/highway/combined).

When shod with 20" wheels, the EPA-estimated range drops to 224 miles, and the MPGe records 114/96/105. The FWD model swaps the AWD variant’s rear eAxle for a subframe, which effectively reduces vibrations and noise for more tranquil and smooth motoring.

2. RZ450e

The RZ 450e employs DIRECT4, an all-wheel drive system first seen in the 2023 Lexus RX. This system features a rear eAxle that works in tandem with the engine and front motor. The DIRECT4 system comprises two high-power, high-torque eAxle units, each propelling a set of wheels, one at the front (150-kW) and one at the back (80-kW).

Three-point eAxle motor mounts, each fitted with a lightweight aluminum bracket, are symmetrically placed on either side to counteract the eAxle’s torque.

The DIRECT4 system dynamically adjusts drive force, traction, and vehicle posture (like pitch and dive) to match driving conditions and the load on each wheel. The system can vary front-to-rear torque distribution from 100:0 to 0:100, depending on the driving context.

The 450e uses a 71.4 kWh battery developed by Prime Planet Energy & Solutions (PPES). The unit delivers robust performance with a total system horsepower of 308 and a 0-60 acceleration time of 5.0 seconds.

The EPA-estimated range is 220 miles when riding on 18" wheels, and the EPA-estimated MPGe is 115/98/107 (city/highway/combined). On 20" wheels, the EPA-estimated MPGe drops to 102/87/95, and the EPA-estimated range is 196 miles.

The Best 2024 Lexus RZ Model

Best 2024 Lexus RZ model.

When a vehicle’s grading starts with the term “Premium,” that signifies there’s never a dull moment in the model’s lineup. Consequently, the 2024 RZ’s base-level Premium trim offers appealing features like a panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, all-wheel drive, a power-adjustable steering column, and additional amenities.

Opting for the Luxury trim introduces enhancements such as a Mark Levinson stereo system and multi-colored ambient interior lighting. However, it's important to note that the larger wheels on the Luxury trim can impact the RZ's driving range.

For this reason, we'll gladly stick with the slightly more affordable Premium model to strike a balance between features and driving efficiency.

2024 Lexus RZ's e-TNGA Drivetrain And Enhanced Handling

2024 Lexus RZ handling.

The RZ benefits from a lightweight e-TNGA steel platform designed for high body rigidity and optimal weight distribution. The vehicle's body construction utilizes high-tensile steel panels and an aluminum hood, reducing weight and increasing rigidity.

A host of innovative technologies, such as Laser Screw Welding and Laser Peening, short-pitch spot welds, and high-rigidity expansion joints, are used to merge the body and platform seamlessly. The platform's lightweight nature also improves stability and ride comfort.

The 96-cell lithium-ion battery pack mounted under the vehicle floor promotes a low center of gravity and inertia movement. A urethane sealant protects the stack's reinforced structure from dust and water, while efficient water-cooling and water-heating systems maintain an optimal battery temperature.

The RZ's driving performance is further enhanced by the front MacPherson strut-type suspension and rear trailing arm multi-link configuration. Both are strategically positioned and tuned for improved handling balance, roll posture, and ride comfort.

At the rear, the RZ's suspension features Frequency Reactive Dampers (FRD) that adjust the damping force on the extension stroke in response to the road surface frequency input.

This system, along with the e-TNGA platform, supports key Lexus Driving Signature traits such as precise control of sprung weight, natural posture changes, tactile steering feel, and linear responses of steering, braking, and acceleration operations.

Braking and Steering

2024 Lexus RZ powerplant.

The Lexus Driving Signature is also evident in the new Active Hydraulic Booster-G (AHB-G) braking system. It collaborates with the RZ's regenerative motor capability to decrease vehicle speed while enhancing vehicle posture.

The braking system, equipped with a new Vehicle Stability Control actuator and an on-demand pressurizing system using a high-performance pump motor, ensures a natural and responsive brake pedal feel.

The distribution of brake force from front to rear is managed by independent pressure regulation, contributing to a comfortable and stable driving experience during braking. Moreover, ergonomic brake pedal pads facilitate easy pedal changes and depression.

Furthermore, the 2024 RZ’s Vehicle Braking Posture Control program tailors front-to-rear brake force distribution based on the driver's braking input and the suspension's vertical inputs, aiming to improve handling and body posture during braking and turning.

The standard rack assist-type Electric Power Steering (EPS) system minimizes the amount of steering input required by introducing a new motor and reduction gear setup installed parallel to the steering box.

Additionally, a Motor Control Unit (MCU) with an integrated motor and motor current control ECU shrinks the EPS' size and reduces operational noise.
